Our Story

Owners Caleb and Kayla Spindler met in 2005. Shortly thereafter, Kayla introduced Caleb to his first cappuccino. Little did they know, this single cup of coffee with foamed milk at a hole-in-the-wall coffee shop in small-town Missouri would lead to an obsession that would one day result in That Dog’ll Hunt Coffee Roasters.

While Kayla’s passion for coffee continued, Caleb’s obsession led him to work on a coffee farm for a month in Laos, getting to participate in the entire production process: planting, harvesting, processing, milling, and roasting. After that, Caleb continued to pursue a career in coffee, first as a barista and then as a content creator for a coffee equipment company. During this time, Caleb started experimenting with roasting coffee. He began like most, in a basement, using a modified popcorn popper. This then progressed to a Hottop and eventually a San Franciscan Roaster. Kayla was always down to cup the different roasts Caleb made, and continues to this day to play a major role in nailing down roasting profiles and creating recipes.

Caleb and Kayla have two young kids, who have also played roles in bringing That Dog’ll Hunt to life. The oldest has pretty much taken over their morning pour over brewing process. He’s also got a keen eye for design, playing a major role in bringing about the logo. And although their youngest can’t fully participate, she definitely encourages them to drink more coffee.

Why That Dog’ll Hunt?

Although Caleb and Kayla now live in Austin, TX, they grew up in the Midwest and spent some time in the South, where this phrase is much more common. One of their close friends, Michael, uses this phrase regularly, and when it was time to come up with a name, it just felt like the perfect way to honor their roots and bring some playfulness to the coffee space.
